Jennifer Hudson’s former brother-in-law, William Balfour, has been convicted of killing the Oscar-winning actress’ mother, brother and nephew in October 2008.

The 30-year-old Balfour has been found guilty of three counts of first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

Hudson was in the courtroom as the verdict was read, and the former American Idol finalist was reportedly in tears as she heard the guilty verdict come down.

According to the Associated Press, jurors came to the decision after three days of deliberation in the case against Balfour, who was previously married to Hudson’s sister Julia. Prosecutors described the brutal slayings as an act of vengeance by a jilted husband who grew jealous of Julia’s relationship with another man.

At one point, the jury was split on the decision, sending the judge a note indicating that they were at an impasse, but made clear that they intended to continue their deliberations.

Hudson attended every day of the trial and was called to testify when it opened April 23, 2012.
